Party-Stimmung bei Silversea

SILVER RAY

SILVER RAY Steel Cutting

Party atmosphere at Silversea – SILVER RAY Steel Cutting

At Silversea Cruises, the celebrations seem to be inescapable. After three ship christenings had already been celebrated this year, namely the SILVER ORIGIN, SILVER DAWN and most recently the SILVER ENDEAVOR, the next event was celebrated on November 23rd. The traditional ceremony for the first steel cutting of the SILVER RAY, the second ship of the Evolution class, took place at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg.

The SILVER RAY will be a sister ship to the SILVER NOVA, which is already under construction. The latter is expected to be delivered in the summer of 2023. The SILVER RAY should then follow in the summer of 2024.

According to the shipyard, both ships set new standards for environmental protection and luxury cruising with a large number of innovations. They will therefore be by far the most sustainable in their class. Thanks to an innovative fuel concept with low-emission LNG, a fuel cell system for all hotel operations and batteries, the new ship had the best possible measures to reduce emissions.

Segens-Zeremonie in Puerto William

Photo Gallery: SILVER ENDEAVOR christened in Antarctica

The SILVER ENDEAVOUR, completed in Stralsund, Gemany, in 2021 as CRYSTAL ENDEAVOR and taken over by Silversea Cruises in 2022, was christened on November 19, 2022 in Antarctica.

Silversea Cruises held an expedition-style celebration in Antarctica’s Lemaire Channel to christen their SILVER ENDEAVOUR, the eleventh ship in their fleet. Silversea Cruises executives, the ship’s godmother, Felicity Aston, Member of the Order of the British Empire, and select members of the cruise line’s extended family were present when an ice-molded champagne magnum slammed into the hull of the SILVER ENDEAVOUR, to celebrate Silversea Cruises‘ third naming ceremony in just nine months.

Blessing Ceremony in Puerto William

The celebrations began with an intimate blessing ceremony held on November 15 at the Cape Horn Sub-Antarctic Center in Puerto Williams. Local dignitaries from Puerto Williams attended the celebrations. After the usual Royal Caribbean Group bagpipe performance, the Chilean and American national anthems were sung, and Felicity Aston was officially introduced as the ship’s godmother. Jason Liberty, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, and Roberto Martinoli, President and CEO of Silversea Cruises, who were unable to attend in person, sent a video message to thank the community, crew and all employees involved in this milestone to thank. Barbara Muckermann – Silversea’s Chief Commercial Officer – and Felicity Aston addressed the audience.

First christening ceremony in the Lemaire Canal

On Saturday, November 19, SILVER ENDEAVOR became the first ship ever to be christened in the Lemaire Channel – one of the continent’s most scenic straits off the Antarctic Peninsula. In keeping with maritime tradition, Felicity Aston blessed the ship and wished her luck by cutting a ribbon alongside Captain Niklas Peterstam on one of the ship’s outer decks to release a magnum-sized ice-shaped bottle, which was smashed against the hull. The christening guests witnessed the historic moment off the ship, perched on Zodiacs on the 11km long cliff-lined body of water. „Champagne on the rocks“ took on a whole new meaning as guests raised their glasses to toast the christening.

Disney Cruise Lines übernehmen GLOBAL DREAM

Rendering of Global Dream converted into Disney Cruise Liner

Disney Cruise Lines acquire GLOBAL DREAM

Completion by Meyer shipyard

Disney Cruise Lines have confirmed that they will take over the as yet uncompleted GLOBAL DREAM (IMO 9808986). The cruise ship, originally built for Genting Hong Kong, has not been kept building since the MV shipyards went bankrupt, caused by the parent company Genting. The cruise ship is about 75% complete.

In May of this year, a deal with Stena Line to take over GLOBAL DREAM had bounced – we reported on the background.

Disney Cruise Lines now want the cruise liner to be completed by the Meyer shipyard at the Wismar site. According to the insolvency administrator, the shipyard site will be rented fromthe new owner, Thyssenkrupp Marine System, until the end of 2023 for this purpose. In the following year, the ship could, if necessary, still lie at the shipyard’s outfitting quay.

Disney Cruise Lines also surprisingly announced that their new ship will run on green methanol, a very low-emission fuel. The Meyer shipyard makes different statements and speaks of an LNG drive.

Other conversions include the removal of the casino. Disney Cruise Lines want to have the liner converted into a family-friendly ship. In addition, the maximum passenger capacity should no longer be 9,000 as originally planned, but “only” 6,000.

HAVILA CASTOR in Ålesund getauft

HAVILA CASTOR christened in Ålesund

A few days after the HAVILA CAPELLA had been christened in Fosnavåg, Norway, the sister ship, the HAVILA CASTOR (IMO 9865582), was christened on November 14th. This time the naming ceremony took place in Ålesund. The ship’s godmother was Aurora Sævik, granddaughter of Havila’s founder and CEO, Per Sævik. Aurora Sævik felt incredibly proud and lucky to be the godmother of HAVILA CASTOR, she said. She had already helped choose the names of the four coastal liners. Like her sister ships, HAVILA CASTOR is named after a star that is important for navigation.

Havila kystruten is now looking ahead and looking forward to taking over the remaining two ships: HAVILA POLLUX (IMO 9946922) and HAVILA POLARIS (IMO 9946910).

Foto-Galerie: HAVILA CAPELLA in Norwegen getauft

On November 8, 2022, the HAVILA CAPELLA (IMO 9865570) was christened in Fosnavåg, Norway, in front of Havila kystruten’s head office in Mjølstadneset. Godmother was Hege Sævik Rabben, board member and daughter of Havila founder Per Sævik.

During the christening ceremony, it was again emphasized how the name of the HAVILA CAPELLA and the names of her sister ships came about: It all started when the chairman and main shareholder Per Sævik announced a naming competition for the four passenger ships to his eight grandchildren. The idea had been that the names should be Havila followed by a star name.

“The names of all our four ships are guiding stars. Throughout history, Capella, Castor, Polaris and Pollux have been used for navigation at sea and as guides for seafarers” explained Per Sævik during the naming ceremony.

“Like her sister ships, the characteristics of the HAVILA CAPELLA make her a guiding star along the coast. We sailed the World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord with zero-emissions already 4 years ahead of regulatory requirements and have vessels built to meet future needs and opportunities for zero-emissions cruising. So it is fitting that HAVILA CAPELLA is named after a guiding star,” added Managing Director Bent Martini.

The population was invited to take part in the christening ceremony, and despite the rainy weather, numerous guests from Fosnavåg came to celebrate.

The sister ship, the HAVILA CASTOR, is to be christened on November 14 in Ålesund, also as part of an open ship event.

National Geographic Islander II Christening Ceremony

In Lübeck gebauter Cruise Liner frisch getauft

Christening of Lindblad Cruise Liners off Galapagos Island

Built in 1988/89 by Flender shipyard in Lübeck, Germany, as LADY DIANA (IMO 8705266), the 85.20 meter long cruise liner with a gross tonnage of 3,370 was in service for the Genting Group for many years. From 1994 to 2008 she sailed as MEGASTAR TAURUS for Star Cruises and from 2015 to 2021 as CRYSTAL ESPRIT for Crystal Cruises.

In September 2021, before going bankrupt, Crystal Cruises sold their liner to Lindblad Expeditions. Renamed NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ISLANDER II, the ship with space for only 48 passengers will be used for Galapagos cruises.

On October 27, the ship was christened on her new name in Black Turtle Cove, a bay on Santa Cruz Island. Santa Cruz is one of the Galapagos Islands. Godmother was Angela Flaim, wife of the late longtime Lindblad leader Juan Flaim, who had been a passionate advocate for conservation in the Galapagos Archipelago. With the christening Angela Flaim wanted to honor his visionary work. Together with Sven-Olof Lindblad, founders of Lindblad Expeditions, she smashed an environmentally friendly champagne bottle on the bow of the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ISLANDER II for the christening.
